Diablo 2 Resurrected Gambling Guide: How To Make Gambles Profitable?

2/24/2022 11:56:27 AM

The ability to gamble with Gheed and other D2R vendors is potentially very interesting, at least if you know what you're doing and what you want. Here is an explanatory guide on how gambling works in Diablo 2 Resurrected, and how to get a unique item for example.

How To Gamble Effectively & What are the Best Items To Gamble?

Gambling is one of the least intuitive features of Diablo 2 Resurrected, and it is once again thanks to the efforts of players over the past two decades on the original game that we have a better understanding of it, and that best practices are known. We will explain the main points here without going into too much technical and mathematical detail.

If you have totally missed out, know that you have a special seller in each act, like Gheed, who offers a special service: gambling. You spend gold on an unidentified item, hoping that it is of good quality.

How Gambling Works in Diablo 2 Resurrected?

To begin with, know that apart from rings and amulets, the price of Diablo 2 Resurrected items is based on the level of your character. But the higher you are, the wider the choice will be, and the more powerful the items can potentially be, with ancient armor for example. You can even theoretically find the most powerful items in the game, at least outside of runes and class items.

  • Exclusive class items like paladin shields, sorceress staffs, javelins, reduced Necromancer helms, etc. are never offered in the gambling window, no need to search.

  • The same goes for charms and jewels (too bad).

You can refresh the seller's selection by clicking on the button at the bottom right, or by holding down the left stick, or by closing the window, if he does not offer the objects you want.

Here are the odds of getting each type of item when gambling:

  • Unique Item (Gold): 1/2000, or 0.05%

  • Set item (green): 1/1000, or 0.1%

  • Rare item (yellow): 1/10, i.e. 10%

  • Magic item (blue): almost 9/10, 89.85% to be precise

You cannot obtain normal (white) items, with or without sockets, nor ethereal items, apart from the very rare always ethereal unique items.

More Tips about Gambling

  • Magic Find has no effect on gambling.

  • The difficulty (Normal, Nightmare, Hell) has no effect on gambling, all that matters is the level of your character.

  • In the same way, the NPC you gamble on has no influence on the outcome.

  • You can gamble solo or multiplayer, it has no influence.

You can't see if the item you're going to get is Normal, Exceptional, or Elite. For example, if at a high level you gamble on caps, you can get a basic one with 2 defense, an exceptional one with 50 defenses (War Hat), or an elite (Shako) with 120 defenses. It will depend on luck.

There are only 2 things apart from your level and your gold reserve that have an influence on the gambles. The first is the possession of Gheed's Fortune Charm, which reduces prices by 10-15%. The second is to be equipped with a bow with the Runeword Edge, which will reduce the prices by 15%. If you plan to make regular use of gambles, it's a good investment. It is rather easy to do.

What is the Main Purpose of Gambling in D2R?

If it wasn't clear enough, apart from a few very rare cases, don't rely on gambles to get unique or set items, especially at a high level. The prices are too high and the chances too low. It's a bit like the lottery, it can happen, but it's not something you can count on in the short or medium term.

The first interest of gambling is to spend your gold in excess while giving you chances to get a useful rare item. For example, if your chest is full of gold and you're missing a good pair of boots, you might as well gamble.

Once at a high level, gambles can help you get your hands on some very rare types of items that are not often encountered, we advise you to gamble on two types of Diablo 2 Ladder items, Amulets, and Headbands, more specifically Tortil type ones. The reason is that these items have a good chance of obtaining very rare and very useful affixes, almost impossible to find through normal loot, such as +1-2 to all skills. You don't need to be super lucky to get these kinds of items.

The other interest is if you forge items through the Horadric Cube. These recipes use specific types of magic items, and it's not easy to get hold of them in large quantities naturally. Gambles can remedy this.

It should be noted, however, that Diablo 2 Resurrected has greatly facilitated the use of gambles compared to the original game, and that these can be used to try to obtain certain specific unique objects by investing not bad time and money. For example, buying thousands of Daggers with a level 11 character gives you a good chance of getting the Gull unique item (+100% magic item research).
