1. path of exile leagues

the first problem you will meet after entering the game is leagues, each league has its own rules, features, limitations and entirely separate markets. there will be permanent, temporary and hardcore leagues in path of exile, the permanent league is fixed, while the temporary league is always changing according to the versions, such as poe 3.6 is synthesis league, poe 3.7 is legion league. so the temporary league usually lasts three months and then updates with new content and features.

standard league is a permanent type of league where you leveling progress, poe items and economy never reset. once the temporary league ends, your character and everything included in it will be migrated into the standard league, but the memory nexus mechanics of the synthesis league is an exception. for hardcore leagues, when your character is killed here, it will move to the standard league. you can have characters in different leagues at the same time but they can't interact with each other.

the charm of path of exile is to experience the feeling of progression when you focusing your builds and leveling process as well as improving your character and gear, on the other hand, when you playing in a permanent league you will soon reach a small upgrade that is very expensive and time-consuming, so if you're a new player playing in temporary leagues is a better choice. in addition, the solo self-found or ssf mode is suited for the advanced players who can find or craft path of exile items on your own and not need to trade with others.

2. path of exile classes

after choosing your leagues, you need to select one of the poe classes to play. different classes will have different ascendancy, starting position on passive tree and character. there are totally 7 character classes in path of exile: marauder, ranger, witch, templar, shadow, duelist, and scion. ascendancies is the subclass that grants access to an ascendancy skill tree, like marauder can choose to be a juggernaut, berserker, or chieftain. 

the starting area on the passive skill tree determines what passives are easier to reach, like most bow-related nodes in the ranger area. skills are granted to players through gems, all of which become available to all classes later in the game.

3. path of exile currency

path of exile currency items means not the coins or gold but various orbs, scrolls, and stones. each piece of poe currency is an item crafting material, for example, the orb of transmutation can upgrade a normal, white, rarity item into a magic, blue, rarity item.

in addition, use it on items directly, another important purpose of currency is to buy equipment and items from vendors, majority of items traded between players are priced in chaos orbs, and the end-game, rare and expensive items are generally priced in exalted orbs, a currency much more valuable than chaos orb. the main way to get currency is from drops and trading with other players, you can also get it by selling items to npcs.

4. path of exile vendor recipes

there are more than 100 vendor recipes in poe, use the specific poe vendor recipes to stock amounts of chaos orbs to buy some good gear. here is the list of some useful recipes you should know about:

- any item with at least 3 linked sockets of red, blue and green color can be sold for a chromatic orb.

- any item with 6 sockets can be sold for 7 jeweller's orbs.

- a whole set of rare items with item level 60+ can be sold for 1 chaos orb.

- unidentified 2 one-handed weapons, 1 one-handed weapon and a shield and 1 two-handed weapon or two shields can get 2 chaos orbs, if the item level is 75+, you can obtain regal orbs instead.

- picking up orbs of transmutation or blacksmith's whetstones and then selling them.

5. path of exile gems and skills

in path of exile, including in poe legion league, you need to use skill gems which placed in a socket of right color on a piece of gear to grant your skill and ability, the poe skill gems are divided into two types: active gems - grant an attack skill or spell and support gems - modify the properties of the linked active skills. with a large number of combinations, there could be a huge variety of builds and play-styles in the game.

- more sockets you linked in a chain, the more support gems you can fit and further boost or modify a particular active skill, but most support gems in the game will provide an advantage in a certain area but also a downside for another.

- each equipped gem individually gains experience along with your character and the number of gems or links has absolutely no impact on your character's xp gains and gems' leveling speed. a new level further improves the damage of the skills or other bonuses the support gems would provide and in many cases this is the best way to improve your dps. however the mana cost and other requirements will also increase, you will need proper gear and passives to put in higher level gems.

- there's a great trick to get at least 6 more sockets is open your inventory and press x or click on this small icon under "inventory", which swap between your weapon sets and any gem placed in the secondary weapons will still gain xp even when they are not being used.

- each gem can also have its quality improved by up to 20%. to improve the quality of a gem you can use a gemcutter's prism which will raise it by 1%.

- keep the gems at a lower level than max can keep fewer requirements, simply right click on the gem's level-up “+” icon, this will prevent it from further gaining xp, aafterwards if you want to further level up that gem just open the inventory and you will find the level-up button in this area. on ps4, you can open inventory and then select the item where the gem is socketed. press circle, find the gem and finally triangle to toggle auto-leveling on and off for that gem.

6. path of exile builds

a poe build or poe legion build including but not limited to pick up certain passives in the tree – active skills, support gems, secondary gems setups, gear, flasks, jewels and ascendancy, all these actually work together to reach a functional thing. there are two archetypes blood and sand gladiator and rage berserker added in the poe 3.7 legion expansion.

7. path of exile divination cards

unique item is an important part in the builds, and they are relatively difficult to gain, the method to farm certain uniques more reliably is through divination cards, a special type of item that can be collected to exchange for a reward. you can a certain number of specific divination cards and exchange them for the poe item you want.

most divination cards drop in a few specific areas or maps, so you can target-farm them quite easily. you can also buy a few cards from other players as well and complete the set. divination cards is a great way to get specific stuff that you need with much more visible progress, apart from unique items, you can also be used for currency, fragments, essences, maps, 6-link items and more.

8. path of exile flasks

in path of exile, there are lots of life, mana and utility flasks provide various bonuses.

- each flask has a maximum number of charges and you spend a certain amount of these every time you use that flask. you gain charges when killing monsters, with magic, rare and unique mobs providing more of these. on top of their main utility such as healing or buffs to evasion or armour, they can host a lot of very useful affixes that will help you deal with some of the toughest debuffs you will encounter, especially in the end-game. they can also greatly improve your clearing speed or damage output, all for the cost of a few alteration orbs.

- one of the most useful flasks in the game is the quicksilver one which greatly increases movement speed, from which every build can benefit much.
