In this Animal Crossing New Horizons guide, we are taking a look at the custom design upgrades as well as some of the most creative umbrella designs and illusions, and how to make them.
Thanks to the latest update that brings Animal Crossing New Horizons up to version 1.9, we finally see some upgrades to the custom design features including an increase in the number of design slots and new customizable Animal Crossing items available
Once version 1.9 is installed, if you head to the Nook Stop terminal inside resident services, you can purchase the Custom Design Pro Editor + for only 2000 Nook Miles. This purchase will upgrade your Custom Design App on the Nook Phone and not only add 100 new custom design slots which is something fans have been asking for pretty much since launch, but also adds four new Pro Design templates. These templates give players the ability to design patterns for the classic standees, flags, uchiwa fans, and umbrellas which is something we're going to look at in more detail shortly.
The upgrade shares the 100 new slots between both normal patterns and pro patterns adding 50 additional slots to each, which is perfect when it comes to using this upgraded custom design feature. The custom design upgrades in version 1.9 don't stop there, as it's also possible to purchase the custom design portal from the Nook Stop too for only 300 Animal Crosing bells. Purchasing the custom design portal pretty much adds the design terminal from the Able Sisters to your Nook Phone allowing you to directly access over 12 million custom designs without the need for heading to the Able Sisters every time you want to use it.
It's very similar to how you can use the Nook Shopping App on the Nook Phone as well as the Nook Stop, to access the new Custom Design Portal from the Nook Phone, simply head to the Custom Design App and select X to open the portal.
If you're looking to create your own umbrella illusion it's super simple, and thanks to one of the creators we mentioned we have some examples of the workflow. All you need to do is:
1. Basically treat every two sections of the umbrella pattern as each side of the cube.
2. Once the basic layout has been created, it's just a case of building up the design which adds to the illusion.
3. Fortunately, the live preview to the side will help you create the look you're going for.
4. The final step is to add any details such as shadows and highlights to complete the pattern.
This is quite the game changer as it now gives you the ability to search for custom designs even when the Able Sisters store is closed. Giving you access to portal 24 7. Thanks to these new features, a brand new style of the pattern has become extremely popular within the community. And thanks to the umbrella design a new wave of umbrella illusions or cube illusions are being created.
Creating a 3D like design using the umbrella template and placing the umbrella in such a way creates incredible illusions of angled boxes or cubes, to which creators are once again making some of the most creative designs you can imagine.
Some designs that are already trending within the community include these adorable kitten tents which are available in a variety of colors and designs. These incredibly detailed Sanrio-themed tents and tanks which are no doubt perfectly timed for the latest Sanrio update, the Kero P tank is beyond creative and the GameCube-inspired umbrella design once again when placed on the floor looks exactly like a GameCube console and brings back so much nostalgia.
You could pretty much create any cube shape item you want using this method, some of the most popular themes include houses, boxes of fruit, book storage and even Minecraft blocks.
